When rerouting beats cleaning a dryer vent

San Jose laundry rooms were rarely planned first. Second-floor laundries got added above a hallway. The duct then climbs to a roof jack, sometimes twenty to thirty-five feet of it. Eichlers and other flat-roof mid-century homes have no attic at all. The run hides in a soffit or punches through a post-and-beam wall. Those are the homes where cleaning stops helping.

Rerouting is a length and elbow problem. Every elbow adds effective length to the run. Stack four of them into a chase and the dryer works against itself. The fix is a shorter path or fewer turns. Sometimes it's a different termination wall entirely. Sometimes that means going down through the floor instead of up.

Old bungalows with raised foundations already vent down to the crawlspace rim. Those runs can usually be shortened and re-terminated outside. Pre-1980 homes still running vinyl or foil transition duct need rigid or UL-listed semi-rigid metal. Joints face downstream and get foil tape, not screws.

Rerouting is not always the answer. A short garage run with a lint-matted hood just needs cleaning and a better hood. Honest reroutes fix runs that are too long or too crushed, ending up somewhere they shouldn't.
