How often does a dryer vent need service?

Run length decides that, not the calendar. A short exterior-wall garage run of 3–8 ft in foil flex stays clear longer, but lint mats behind the bird-screened hood and nobody looks there. Second-floor laundry rooms venting up to roof jacks with 20–35 ft of duct load up fast. Interior-closet stacked units in condos turn 2–4 elbows into a chase. Every elbow is a lint shelf.

Check it yourself. Run the dryer on heat, go outside, hold a hand at the hood. Louvers that barely lift mean restriction. Lint visible at the louvers is worse. Inside, a dryer top hot to the touch or a warm laundry closet door says heat is staying in the house.

Older housing stock changes the work. 1920s–40s bungalows with raised foundations vent down through the floor and out a crawlspace rim. Eichler and flat-roof mid-century homes have no attic, so the duct sits in a soffit or passes straight through the post-and-beam wall. Pre-1980 homes often still have vinyl or foil transition duct. That gets replaced with rigid or UL-listed semi-rigid metal.
